"COLOR GIVES US CLARITY" © SAUNDRA LANE GALLOWAY

"Color Gives Us Clarity"
20"x20" stretched canvas
Private Collection
Occasionally I set aside time to experiment and do something for the house.  This project is part of that.  Recently I bought a rug for our bathroom.  I thought it would be fun to have it kind of have a theme...this theme was COLOR.
The rug was just a fun bit of color and design, so I decided to carry it on to the walls in a couple of ways.  This first way was to take a slice out of the canvas for a bit of a mimic of the design and COLOR.  There is a lot of texture on the remaining negative space giving it some interest beyond the obvious slice of design and color.  I played a bit with the idea of adding bits of color in the negative space, but wasn't happy with it.  It sort of sat on the canvas until last night when I woke up knowing that I wanted to add a phrase that meant something to ME...and after finding a font I liked I put it on and voila`, that was all I felt it needed!  I painted around the sides and have it hanging in my bathroom as we speak!
I want to take this idea of a slice of something further, so plan to do others in different subject matter...THIS may be the project I was looking for to bring to the public much like the "101 Pet Portraits in 101 Days" project...stay tuned!  FUN DOINS!

INSPIRATION STRUCK AND "MAGNOLIA SILOS" WAS BORN © SAUNDRA LANE GALLOWAY

"INSPIRATION IS GOD'S GIFT TO THE ARTIST'S SOUL"
"Magnolia Silos"  18"x18", oil on cradled panel

Sometimes in life we find ourselves profoundly at the mercy of life! Things happen in all of our lives at times that leave us helpless to the events that come.  That has been life for our family the past 15 months.  The actual events may vary from family to family, but it's tough out there folks!  We all feel these things from time to time. We are all surviving, but a little weary from some of the trials.  And on we go...

It is my personality to not give in easily, I find myself looking for those things outside of myself that would bring relief, new hope, INSPIRATION, so I can go on with life.  For me, prayer and my belief in God is what allows me to get up every day and try a new idea, think on things that bring happiness and go on; waiting for the roller coaster to move upward once again.

For whatever reason I began to really watch the tv show on HGTV called "Fixer Upper".  For the few out there who may not have seen it, you have to give it a try.  It is a wonderful married couple; Chip and Joanna Gaines, who find run down homes in their area of Waco Tx and they renovate and then decorate those homes for a family with such expertise and a beautiful result every time.  I happen to love the way they come out, and I am inspired by the end result, but the icing on the cake is their faith in God and their decency in their program!  They have a genuine love for God, for their family (four darling children) and for each other, and it shows.  Even their commercials gave me chuckles during the very dark time of the past year or so!  My favorite was a commercial where Chip is teasing Joanna's love of ship lap where he repeats "ship lap" several times in a high falsetto voice.  Made me LAUGH over and over, and those moments I needed a chuckle I would say "ship lap" over and over in a high voice...we would laugh.  THAT IS VALUABLE FOLKS!  Laughter is a great gateway to getting out of the dark places and into a life of happy!

SO, when I saw their silos I was SO INSPIRED I just had to paint them!  Not only just paint them, but get outside of myself and do something for someone else.  There was really no one to do it for but the two folks that were the origin of this inspiration, this hopeful and happy feeling.  I woke up one day and knew I was going to gift it to them.  No expectations, but to just give something to someone outside of myself.  The joy for me in the process of this painting was a gift in itself.  I am tickled to hope that it actually got to them and they knew that they were doing some good to folks in some perhaps unexpected ways.  THAT is the gift...to give.  This was that for me this year.

I found this photo on line and it was my subject matter.
They bought these silos in the town of Waco and are renovating them. They have their business in them, plus they reach out to their community in giving space for others.

I'm not usually a linear person, but I got out the charcoal and began to sketch the parts that I felt needed to make the structures recognizable to them, and left out a few small details that I felt were not a deterrent to a memory piece they could enjoy; hopefully.
The next step for me was to lay in some color that would show under neath the finished product.
I laid in some texture and pattern to the sky and then took their logo and added it for that extra connection to their project.
if you look closely you can see the checker pattern in the background of their logo.  I took a stamp that repeated that pattern a bit throughout the painting, but it shows most in the sky.  These kind of repetitions help a composition to unify two things that may not be connected in any other way.  This strengthens a painting.

I mixed a couple colors of stain to give a weathered barn board look that complimented the colors and subject in their painting.

The end result was a painting of their silos with their logo attached to hopefully give them a smile now and then.

I boxed it up, got an address to send it, told them how they had inspired me and sent it off. It is a happy feeling to know that IF I could make someone smile with an unexpected gift then the world has a few more smiles to off set the difficulties that sometimes come.

One day I will make my way to Waco an IF I happen to see them, I will say thank you once again!  FUN DOINS FOLKS!  I highly recommend that if you are in a low place in life, try doing something unexpected for someone...it truly is a blessing!

BUSY DAYS IN THE STUDIO

This is my little Gracyn.  Not long ago I asked her mom what her favorite picture was as I had yet to paint her little self...she sent me the pic below and I did my best for the moment...I still maintain that people are NOT my forte, however, I need to paint my little ones...so this is what I came up with...
After a little conference with her momma I darkened Gracyn's hair as she said the photo lightened it...They are happy with the results; but report my little angel has already grown and changed since this photo...I say, we caught a happy moment and one we go! lol

Below is my grandson Ethan.  He is actually 2 now, but the second I saw this photo taken at about 4 months I knew I wanted to paint it...I adore his cute little expression!

I also took an idea I saw on Pinterest where you cover a letter with a page from their favorite book.  Being the practical person I am, I had to make it useful...so I put their letters on a plaque and made a hook for a sweater or some such thing for their rooms.
Ethan loves Paw Patrol, so his letter has the pups all over it and a blue doggie for the "hook"
Paxton's first book he read all by himself was "Hop on Pop" by Dr. Seuss, so of course that was his page.
Precious Gracyn doesn't have a favorite book yet, so, since her nursery is decorated with elephants and white and lavender and grey, I chose "Horton Hears  Who" by Dr. Seuss for her book.  I actually took a few pages and melded them together for hers.

AND, still making ornaments...these two were for friends, but I like the blue as well as the red...
SO, aside from a few commissions and some more ostrich's and a painting for a celebrity out in Texas ( a story for another day) that is it thus far...Still busy working on other ideas...but having FUN!

"DARK ANNIE - AN OSTRICH IN A MOOD" ORIGINAL OIL ON PANEL © SAUNDRA LANE GALLOWAY

"Dark Annie - an Ostrich in a Mood"
4"x4" oil on panel
SOLD

This girl is just in a mood for sure...aren't we all at times?  What a great gift for yourself or a friend who needs to laugh at those moody days we have!

Well, winter has come in and reminded us of the work involved when it snows! Poor hubby is out with the snowblower...and after the LONG driveway we have three decks.  This is the price for living up here in the mountains...when we were younger it was no biggie, but as time goes on...all that shoveling gets to a person!
no bbq's for us in the near future!

even the birds are holed up somewhere...

Yep, no deck time for us!

so, about 15" this time...brrr, so glad for a cozy warm inside!

"Two of a Kind" Ostrich Friends
4"x4" oil on panel

Available through my ETSY shop
I really enjoyed painting this ostrich duo!  I always have fun painting ostrich's, but there are two this time, so twice the fun!
It would be as simple as putting these girls on a small easel, or you could mount them on your favorite matte board color in 5"x5" and frame them in a 5x5 frame so all their sides show! FUN AGAIN!

"LADY O - AN OSTRICH" © SAUNDRA LANE GALLOWAY

"Lady O - an Ostrich"
4"x4" oil on panel

Lady O is my latest Ostrich sweetie.  I find her quite ladylike and charming!
displaying her could be as easy as a small easel!

Recently we purchased a TV for our bedroom that was smaller than the last one, so I began to search for a something that could serve as a stand to bring the TV higher in our cabinet...I found this awful dark box with a drawer and a hideous pull.  I WISH I'd remembered to take a photo of the before, but here is the after...I rather enjoy it's simplicity...and it serves it's purpose quite nicely!

FUN!

I've worked on the drawing for my Magnolia Silos I spoke about in my last post...this is a little closer to their actual shape...
Where there is a will there is a way!

CHRISTMAS ORNAMENTS AND A SPECIAL PROJECT © SAUNDRA LANE GALLOWAY

Jingle Ornament
at the Aar River Gallery in Westminster

I saw some ornaments similar to this SOMEWHERE...and decided to make some with my own personal flair.  I will be making several that will be for sale at the Aar River Gallery in Westminster.

I am working on a project that is something that I feel led to do!  This past year has been among the hardest for my family...there have been lots of stressful events, heartbreaking events and, well, not much fun...SO, I've watched some HGTV to try to rest my brain.  My FAVORITE show of all is Fixer Upper with Chip and Joanna Gaines.  They are so decent, and fun and have christian values...it's been an  inspiring and uplifting escape for me.  Not to mention I absolutely LOVE the way Joanna decorates!  When they bought the silos in town and began to renovate I immediately had the strongest desire to paint their silos and send them as a gift; a thank you, if you will, for what a blessing their lives and show have been this past year especially!  SO, that is exactly what I am going to do!  It's on my easel, and in between my other projects I am tackling it...Here is the beginning...It's just a quick sketch to get my angles and arcs correct...looks like I have some adjusting to do already, but I will get there!  I'm wanting them to take up most of the 18"x18" panel...a close up if you will!  Wish me luck!
I have NO IDEA what I'm going to say to them...so that I don't look like some kind of nut, HA...but, hopefully they will just take the gift of gratitude and smile!

Tis the season, right?
